Cardboard Recycling

Though cardboard is generally taken for granted, it plays an important role in the world’s economy. The vast majority of products sold to both businesses and consumers are enclosed in cardboard during shipping. From 5th Avenue in New York City to rural markets in developing worlds, cardboard plays an essential role in commerce. In fact, many products will be placed in multiple cardboard containers on its trip from manufacturer to end user.

Cardboard Definition

Cardboard is actually a general term that refers to a range of paper products. Cardboard can refer to anything from simple products like thick pieces of paper to more complex ones such as corrugated fiberboard. Corrugated fiberboard is one of the most common types of cardboard. It features smooth sides that are divided by paper ridges that hold the sides at an even distance. Corrugated fiberboard is useful as the corrugation strengthens the cardboard and helps to cushion the contents in the package. Most carboard boxes are made of corrugated fiberboard.

Cardboard Recycling

With so many uses, the world creates a lot of cardboard. The amount of cardboard circulating in the world would quickly fill and overflow all available landfill space if not for one simple reason: cardboard is highly recyclable. Unlike some other products, such as plastic wrap and Styrofoam, cardboard recycling is a relatively simple process. In fact, Cardboard Recycling Services Melbourne by AB Recycling reuse cardboard boxes multiple times until they become unusable from wear. When the time comes to actually recycle the materials in a cardboard box, or other type of cardboard, cardboard recyclers can quickly process the material and get it back in circulation.

Exception

One exception to the ease of cardboard recycling is when it becomes dirty. As the fibers in cardboard are absorbent, they can become saturated with foreign substances which makes them unrecyclable. For example, grease soaked pizza boxes cannot be recycled as the grease filled fibers would clog the cardboard recycling machines. While carboard that has been saturated cannot be recycled into new cardboard products, they can be composted as long as the cardboard has not been contaminated.

Cardboard Recycling Process

The start of the cardboard recycling process is shredding the material into small pieces. The cardboard is then turned into pulp through a process of soaking it in water and small amounts of chemicals that speed the process. Foreign objects, such as tape and plastic labels are removed and recycled separately. After turning the cardboard into pulp, it is then mixed with wood chips which help the strengthen the newly made paper to make it more usable. Recycled cardboard can be made into a variety of paper products, but most of it will end up being made into cardboard, reused and then returned into the cardboard recycling process.
